Utilities are Closing Areas Off to Solar Development. Act Now!
Updated: Jun 6, 2019

Utility companies are both closing and limiting areas across the Tri-State to solar development. Learn about this trend and what it means to your ability to convert your home or business to solar energy.
About New Jersey solar energy:
As SolarPowerRocks explains: "...New Jersey consistently earns one of the top spots in our annual ranking of the states for their friendliness to home solar. The Garden State earns that top spot both because it has excellent legislative policy driving the solar marketplace, which includes the nation’s top solar incentive: Solar Renewable Energy Credits, or SRECs for short."
How do Utility Companies impact my ability to convert my home or business to solar energy?
When you convert your home or business to solar energy, you stay connected to the utility grid through a process called "utility interconnection." This process is essential to both functionality, as well as key incentive programs, such as Net Metering as the Solar Renewable Energy Credits (as ascribed above). Simply put, solar projects for both home and businesses rely upon the local utility company.
How are Utility Companies closing areas to solar energy?
As illustrated by the map below, Utilities such as ACE, DPL and Pepco are restricting areas to solar development by establishing a "Maximim System Size" in designated areas. Some areas have been restricted to a 0 kW "Maximum System Size" (closing them entirely), while others have limited the "Maximum System Size" to 50 kW (which limits the types of solar projects that can be developed).
